Although climate change is devastating for everyone, children will be the ones to feel the greatest impact of the changes. Researchers believe that we have only seen the beginning of climate change and that those who are currently children will be adults by the time the climate changes even further.

Climate change causes more damage for children than adults.

Children’s rights are about ensuring that all children in the world live in good conditions. Climate change has serious consequences for all life on earth and affects the future of all children. For example, it affects whether children can attend school, whether they can access adequate healthcare and whether their homes are safe to live in. This is why stopping climate change is one way in which we can work for children’s rights.

Children's rights have nothing to do with climate change.

By acquiring knowledge and by sharing your views with friends, classmates and family members, you can help make a difference. All changes start off small. Choose to reuse rather than buy new, cycle to practice instead of getting a lift or do something active together with other children via the Eco-Agents. Your actions make a difference.

Children cannot do anything to stop climate change.

Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states that all children have the right to express their opinions and influence matters that affect them. Children can, for example, write, speak, draw or cry to express their views.

Children have a right to express themselves and to be heard.

Writing your opinions on a poster and protesting is one way in which to express your opinions. The school strikes started with a single person expressing their opinions when Sweden’s Greta Thunberg protested outside the Swedish parliament. Her sign read "School strike for climate". Since then, several thousand children have protested to stop climate change.

The authorities who rule the country and the local area in which children live are responsible for ensuring that the rights of children are safeguarded. When the authorities fail to follow up on this, children have the opportunity to speak up. Children in Norway, Sweden and many other parts of the world have taken legal action against the authorities in their countries because they believe that the authorities have not adequately safeguarded children’s right to a liveable environment and climate.

Children cannot do anything when children’s rights are violated.
