The Paris Agreement, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the UN Nature Treaty and the UN Ocean Treaty are all agreements entered into by nearly every country in the world. The purpose of the agreements is to ensure that the world’s countries are able to limit climate change.

The world has several plans in place for how the world’s countries will work to stop climate change.

As members of an environmental organisation or club, children and young people can help speak up about what children consider important when it comes to climate and environmental issues. In this way, children and young people have the opportunity to help influence climate and environmental changes.

Children can do something for the climate and environment by joining an environmental organisation or club.

In Norway, the organisation Children’s Climate Panel submits a report every year to the authorities that rule the country. The report says what children think about the climate. Every country in the world also agreed during the UN climate negotiations that children’s voices are important when drawing up new climate policies and that children should be included in the processes.

Children are not heard on issues that affect them.

After Sweden’s Greta Thunberg decided to skip school to strike for the climate in 2018, the idea spread to other countries. Since then, several hundred thousands of pupils and students have gone on school strike for the climate. This has resulted in the establishment of the organisation “School strike for the climate”, which hopes to change climate policies worldwide. Children also helped influence other countries to agree to include children in developing new climate policies at the UN climate negotiations in 2022.

Although children have the right to express their opinion and to be heard on issues that affect them, this does not lead to change.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the worst climate and environmental changes can be stopped. First and foremost, the world needs to emit less greenhouse gases. This is why there are several agreements and plans in place detailing how the world’s countries will do this.
